8 Fyke Nets Installed by the DNR on North Twin Lake

On 04/28/2026 DNR hatchery employees installed (8) fyke nets on the south/southeast shoreline of North Twin Lake. Typically, the DNR hatchery resources will collect walleye eggs via the Eagle River Chain.  This year the eggs did not fare so well, so they felt that North Twin would provide them the best opportunity to gather the necessary eggs to fulfill their stocking obligations for the upcoming year …

Below is a brief summary of their activities:

  1. Tuesday 04/28 - 42F water temp, setup (8) fyke nets on the south/southeast shoreline of North Twin Lake

  2. Wednesday 04/29 - 42F water temp, inspected 5 of the (8) nets and captured the necessary eggs (approx. 27 quarts) for future subsequent DNR stocking efforts in Northern Wisconsin

    1. The remaining (3) nets were simply run and emptied.  The nets had between 150-450 walleye/net.  The majority of the females were ripe and providing eggs.  They spawned (55) females from 14.7” to 28.0” (avg - 20.0”) with (58) males from 13.5” to 19.0” (avg 15.8”).  See attached spreadsheet for individual lengths of all fish spawned and genetic samples taken

  3. Thursday 4/30 - Ran and pulled all (8) nets.  Noticed more spent females and the male catch dropped to some degree

  4. Other observations - Captured (4) musky in the 48-50” range and several yellow perch around 13”
